A downloadable game for Windows

Gather materials, build a spaceship and explore procedural worlds. This is an early alpha of my game with the following features:

  • Spaceship-building system using panels, cables & levers
  • Realistic gravity simulation and planetary rotations
  • 2 planets, a moon and a ring system to explore
  • 1-4 players online co-op
  • Beautiful programmer art
  • Many bugs that I'm aware of and probably many more that I'm not

My goal is to create a seamless spaceship-building game where you manage fuel, oxygen, and warp capabilities to travel across the vast distances of a galaxy. If you want to follow along with the game's development, you can check out my social media:

was looking for a fun game to play with friends and found this gem in the making cant wait to see it evolve over time . Was real fun playing around in the galaxy with friends and just getting shot into space while being afk and coming back confuzed .

But i do have some questions and suggestions :

Q_1. will there be any automation or maybe some kind of electrical grid ?

Q_2. will there be any procedural generated structures or locations where one may find something they couldnt craft or just a ship or something in a building ?

Q_3. Painting or other materials to make the builds look better in the future ?

Q_4. will there be any goals ?

Q_5 will there be other galaxys in the future ?

S_1 . some kind of altitude meter to know how close to space one is .

S_2. sprinting and crouching

S_3.some kind of bigger way to store fuel because (man ... those thrusters are some thirsty thrusters ) or if you are going to add electricity maybe some ion thrusters that are weaker but just need energy to func and would work better out of atmosphere

Hello! I'm glad you enjoyed the game with your friends. Here are some answers to your questions:

  1. I don't know about automation, but an electric grid is something I'd like to try out.
  2. I plan to make exploration more interesting. That may include structures to check out.
  3. Painting is a pretty cool idea. I might check it in the future, but I'm not prioritizing it right now.
  4. I aim for the game to be a sandbox/exploration type game (think Minecraft or Astroneer) there will probably be a goal, but the bulk of the game is mostly building and exploring.
  5. There's currently a single solar system, but I'd like to add interstellar travel to check out other stars and planets.

Thank you for your other suggestions! I've taken note of them :)

I was trying to find a fun space game, and this satisficed me enough, i have built a space station in the rings of that one planet, this is a big opportunity for game making

I just stumbled across this game after looking into procedural asteroid generation and am having a blast. Keep up the awesome work!

Thank you! If you have any questions regarding how the asteroids are generated in the game, I'd be happy to help.

Im flying towards the desert planet and i was wondering if theres any new loot there?

U should add giant robot enemies and more ores to build stuff

add enemy's and docking i love the game

as the other comments its a really fun base for a full game, its really nice with the phisics and the building, there is just one thing at the beggining you really cant find iron fast (apart from the starter crash site ofcourse), maby you could add a sprint thing so you can run around faster when you dont have a rocket. but overall its a really really great game.

you also could increase the iron spawnrates.

but its just such a nice game the building the gravity it just fits the style

Thanks for the feedback! Were you able to craft a ship with the starting materials?

Hello I played with my friend the game is realy fun and the starting materials were enough to craft a ship

yes i could, just as the controls (for the first ship) are hard and the iron and sand ores are scattered far apart, so if you fump on the first ship and fall offc(happend a couple of times) it takes much time to get another ship. So the 2 main tips from me: add some kind of sprint thing  and increase the iron and glass spawn rate.

I didn't do much research on the game before installing it, and I can't describe to you my excitement when I discovered for myself that I could go out into space to discover new planets, being able to design your own ship and send it out into space is excellent, I'll stay tuned, the controls seem perfect to me, they have their difficulty (mostly when you leave the atmosphere) but they don't become tedious. Thank you very much for this, and sorry if my English sounds strange, it is not my main language.

I'm glad you liked it! English is not my main language either, and I appreciate that you took the time to write this :)

♥♥♥

I spent hours deciding on the design and connecting everything to make it work, but I think it looks pretty good (not so much the connections on the back).

How can I support this project? I don't see a way to donate to it and I'm relatively unfamiliar with Itch.io's interface.

This game is way more fun than I first expected. The gravity physics make it feel so real, having to plan and adjust for momentum in a vacuum (Like in The Outer Wilds) makes building your own ships so indescribably satisfying. I have no doubt this is the skeleton for a great future sandbox game! Only thing I'm missing is keymapping, is there a config file I can edit to adjust my controls?

Thank you so much for the kind comment!

It's possible to donate on my ko-fi page if you want to support the game: https://ko-fi.com/curiousowl

As for the keymapping, there's no way to configure it right now. It's a feature I'm planning to add in a future update. What were the keys you wanted to rebind?

I wanted to remap the flight controls to match familiar flight sims like elite dangerous: R is up, F is down. I wanted to change the interact key from F to E also. But that doesn't mean I'm not enjoying the game, I've made a fully decked out interplanetary shuttle and an inter-atmosphere exploring vessel so far! Interested in finding out the efficacy of building Freighters and perhaps Star Stations. PS. Would be awesome to see ship docking, resource automation (for fueling large ships), and ground structures in the future!

Thank you for the feedback! I've taken note of your suggestions and a lot of them align with where I want the game to go.

I'm most excited about docking and seeing what kind of ships people start to build!

That's great to hear! Keep up the incredible work, independent studio's and dev's like you will be the one's to breath life back into gaming!

this is actually so good

(+1)

Left my friend behind by accidentally warping while he was spacewalking. 10/10

(+1)

actually fire game 🔥 played for 4 and a half hours straight, cant wait for more updates

how do i use the debug settings?

With the dev tools enabled, you can press F1 for fly mode and F2 for free resources.

idk how to mine asteroids every time i try i ether fly away and die or it won't let me mine it.

Asteroid mining is pretty difficult. Make sure you bring your ship to a full stop near an asteroid before going out to mine. Once you leave your ship, you can move around in space and reach resources. You can check the controls for moving on this page.

I just created an account to tell you thank you. I really loved the game! the building system has so many posibilities! would like some way to attatch a base in any of the asteroids o some kind of waypoint to mark where I stablished my base! keep up the good work mate! cheers from Argentina!

Thank you for your comment and suggestion!

Btw you can retrieve a ship/base by placing a beacon part on it. The targeting computer will let you select the beacon you placed.

thanks man!

Game is amazing

ITS SO FUN ME AND MY FRIEND PLAYED

I couldn't see the map when I was playing it, but the game is still good

I've played through Stellar Drive a few times now over the years, the latest time with my wife after convincing her to try it with me. It's exactly the kind of thing I can't wait to see more of! When you added co-op, I got so excited. Being able to share a ship with someone, where one of us can walk around the ship while the other pilots, is such an immense joy! Thank you for creating this!

I know you have grand ideas, and I know there will be plenty of updates, so I'm not too worried. I hope you don't lose your drive because this game is genuinely fun, and has tremendous potential. One day, having more things to do on the ship will make co-op play even more engaging. Maybe things like scanning for asteroids, plotting routes, diverting power to different ship systems... anything that allows crew-mates things to do during a trip.

But that said, I absolutely love what you have here, and I can't wait to see more! Keep up the amazing work, Curious Owl!

Wow, thank you so much for taking the time to write this! That's very encouraging to read <3

This game is great, I personally love the atmospheric scattering on planets, maybe in the future you will be able to implement volumetric clouds?

I think that would be a huge step up

Thanks :) I think clouds would be awesome too.

great game but needs sprinting and more planets. It would also so be cool to have some land vehicles and maybe an enemy ai.

Thank you for your suggestions!

Leaving the game in fullscreen mode to take screenshots, view messages, etc while running the game causes a fatal error and makes the game entirely unresponsive, not even for graphics.

Similarly, leaving the game in any manner in windowed mode makes the game entirely unresponsive to input. Forced restart becomes the only option.

I play on manjaro linux through proton, works well so far, I like it

I just slap prime-run on plain old WINE, works for me lol. Runs alright on EndeavorOS.

очень круто, но к сжелениум нет возможности приседать, это доставляет неудобства.

Great game. I always wanted something like this, to travel through space and enjoy the planets viewn in first person. Probably there are more games like this but my shitty pc doesn't support them, so this one is great. I hope you continue the development of this game, I'm enjoying it.

Thank you! I'm still working on it and I'm glad to read that it works well enough on lower end hardware.

ad a ladder and a cable gun ..suggestion..

Love the game, i died in space after spending an hour working on a good ship, i thin you should add player respawn for the ship in the research item (suggestion

Thank you for your suggestion! I'm glad you liked the game.

plz add controller suppor

It's a beautiful game, still a few bugs, but looking forward to the next updates

Thank you! Were there bugs that you found particularly frustrating?

I just want to know if it is normal for the land not to show

It sounds like the same issue that Weapon100 has reported bellow. Unfortunately, I don't think there's much you can do for now.

I made this account just to post on this wonderful game. Firstly, amazing game. It is wonderfully made and I can see how much work must have gone in to this. All the systems are well polished, but I have been unable to use most of them. Why? Well, whenever I load into the world, there is the spawn area with a single tree. Nothing else. There is a floor, but it is untextured. Random bits of ground are clipped into the floor or stretched across the sky like a second asteroid belt. I would love to explore more, but with only one tree, I have on 3 fuel. Please let me know if this a problem on my end (my computer is not very good) or if there is anything I can do to fix it. Cheers, and have a good day!

Hi :) First off, thank you for trying out my game! The bug you encountered fits what some other players have experienced. Players using embedded intel GPUs have issues with the procedural generation. Are you running the game on a laptop by any chance?

Thanks for the quick reply. I am running on a laptop, and an older one at that. Anything I can do?

I don't think there's much you can do on your side. If you want, you could send me your log file to help me investigate the issue. It's called "logs.txt" in the game's directory that you extracted. Make sure to edit it to make sure no personal info are in there.

You can reach me on Discord or Twitter through DMs. (The links are in the game description). I also have an email: curious.owl.games@gmail.com (I don't look at it that much though).

Thanks :)

(+1)

Ok, will do. Im going to send it as an email.

I've tried to get into No Man's Sky on and off for 2 years, and I have just torn myself away from 3 straight hours of what I first mistakenly thought was merely a satire of the former. I was laughingly grateful at the simplicity of the resource system, and relieved at the lack of barrier to entry in the form of loading, tutorials, and handholding, and was soon chasing after a runaway jet engine on a plank. I later thrust myself upward to see how far I could reach without oxygen, surprised to see that there were details beyond this world. I've now visited each available planet. In such a simple environment, I've experienced several memorable moments of discovery.

Thanks.

Wow thank you so much for taking the time to write this! This is the exact kind of experience I want to give with this game and I'm glad you enjoyed it. This made my day :)

(+1)

the only issue ive encountered is just my ship tumbling over, me dying, and now i can never find my ship, but its still pretty damn good, i just like these types of games in general though so im a little biased.

(+1)

Thank you for your comment :) I'd like to better understand what killed you in the game and what was frustrating. Was it falling from the ship?

(2 edits) (+1)

The sequence of events was just, slam into tree as usual, get out of seat, mine tree, go back in seat, role for a minute to try and get back over, and for some reason die, might have been from being upside down or something idk. It wasn't too bad since spawn had decent resources though.

Now that I think about it, it might have been fall damage constantly hitting me cause I was upside down at just the right spot.

(+1)

Physics can get weird when landing or upside down. It's something I'll have to look into. Thanks for the feedback!

(+1)

Its a great game, do you have a patreon or anywhere where people could support you?

Thank you! I don't have a Patreon or anything like that right now. I might set it up later.

(+1)

it's pretty good, do you think you will be adding more planets or have a full release?

Thanks! I'm focusing on core features right now before adding new content, but more planets to explore is definitely something I'd like to add in the future.

Great to hear you're still making it! another thing i want to ask is do you plan on adding enemy ai or ground vehicles? i feel like it would be great for early game to just be a ground vehicle then you move on to spacecrafts but that's just my opinion you can do what you want. last thing please fix movement in space, i can't even mine asteroids or get to another planet

Enemies or ground vehicles are not planned right now, but I might consider it as the game evolves.

As for the movement in space, I'm currently working on a fix for the spaceship movement that sometimes gets unstable in space. There are still some issues with the player's movements. I'll have to look into that too.

(+1)

Anticipation for seeing what all you've done for the update is really getting to me. Do you have any thoughts on an ETA for us? Even maybe a guesstimate?

I'm happy to see you're anticipating the next update! I don't know when it will come out though because there are too many tasks that I'm unfamiliar with.

That being said, I'm working hard on it and you can check the Discord for weekly updates :)

(+1)

its a great game, i really enjoy the building of the spaceship and flying, my only complaint is that its a bit difficult to get resources from the ateroids, other than that its really fun

Thank you! Is there a specific part you found difficult? like bringing your ship to a stop or navigating around outside your ship?

(+1)

The navigating outside of the ship was tough, i built a large platform outside to be able to mine the resources though

(2 edits) (+1)

Absolutely loving this. I truly hope you continue to develop on it. So far, I've already been playing for like 5 hours, and I'm not done yet! I definitely think there needs to be a clear "velocity vector" indicator, though. Trying to figure out exactly what my prograde and retrograde alignments are is certainly not easy in the current build.

Thank you so much! I'm still working on the game and I'm currently adapting it for multiplayer support. Looking forward to releasing it :)

I've taken note of your comment on the velocity vector. I appreciate it!

(5 edits)

Awesome, thanks!

Is the multiplayer going to be optional?? I reeeeally enjoy this as a chill single-player relaxation experience, and I'd hope you don't get rid of the single-player option in lieu of multiplayer.

Also, in addition to the velocity vector marker, I have a few other suggestions, if you're interested?

USABILITY ITEMS

A.) An autorun hotkey, such as 'NumLock' or 'Tilde' which would act as the player pressing and holding the 'W' key. I've found myself spending an incredibly long amount of time trying to walk from one resource to the next, even with a hoverbike. So much that my fingers got sore. I think autorun would really increase QOL.

B.) 'C' to crouch while walking around

C.) Either middle mouse click to toggle, or right mouse click-and-hold for "mouse-look" mode, allowing player to look around while in pilot seat without turning ship.

D.) The ability to combine stacks of items. For example, I have one stack of 5, and another of 7, of the same item. I should be able to make this a stack of 12.

E.) An altimeter.

F.) A flashlight, for exploring the night side of planets.

EQUIPMENT WISHLIST

A.) A wider variety of window pieces, to match the existing wall and floor structure elements, such as a flat horizontal window, so that we can look above or below our ship, and the slanted / corner pieces. This will help us build nicer cockpits.

B.) 2 new types of splitters, similar to the existing one, but for fuel. One of which should have 1 female socket, and 3 male sockets, allowing for a single tank to feed multiple tanks. The other, which has 3 female sockets and 1 male socket, so that multiple fuel tanks could all be feed into a single thruster (such as main engines, which need more fuel).

C.) Steerable motorized wheels, so that the player could create a land-buggy that doesn't rely on rocket engines, and is easier to turn. Maybe this would need a new type of equipment (battery), and a new type of material (Nickel?) to charge the battery with.

D.) Buildable storage crate, that we can place in our ship, to act as a fixed-based inventory, separate from our on-person inventory.

FEATURE WISHLIST

A.) Would be cool if the planets rotated, creating a day/night cycle.

B). More star systems!!!

C.) Clouds.

That's enough suggestions for now, I think, lol. Keep up the great work!

Thanks for all the suggestions :)

Don't worry about the single-player mode. I play mostly solo, and it's super important for me that the game works well in single-player too.

Also, I saw you joined the Discord server! You can share what you have built with us if you want. I would love to see it!

Will do! I'm in the midst of a truly MASSIVE project. I'm attempting a scale reproduction of the S.S. Botany Bay, from Star Trek TOS. It's 7 stories tall...   and gonna take me some time. But I'll certainly grab some screenshots and share some progress soon.

This is insane hahaha. Remember to save often because you'll certainly push the game to its limit!  I'm looking forward to seeing your creation
